Our History
The Fermentation Boom
Global interest in fermentation rises across food and beverage sectors. In Costa Rica, concern over animal-based fermentation inspires our search for ethical, sustainable alternatives—leading us to thermal water as a clean medium.
Exploring Thermal Spring Waters
We begin studying Costa Rica’s geothermal resources to analyze pH, mineral profiles, and their role in sustainable fermentation—laying the foundation for what will later become dermocosmetic innovation.
Acquiring Hacienda Orosi
Our family acquires Hacienda Orosi, home to thermal springs and coffee plantations. This moment marks the convergence of nature, sustainability, and science in our future vision.
Go Bears!
Paulina begins Bioengineering studies at UC Berkeley, focusing on Synthetic & Computational Biology and sustainable bioprocessing.
Collaboration with Nespresso
We achieved a significant milestone with the first production of our process for fermenting coffee in hot spring water, partnering with Nespresso to deliver a unique product.
Launch of Master Origin Costa Rica
Our innovative fermentation process gained recognition with the launch of Nespresso’s Limited Edition Master Origin Costa Rica. – Flavor Profile: Cereal & Malty – Processing Technique: Coffee beans were selectively handpicked and soaked for 12 hours in natural hyper-thermal mineral water (65-70°C). The minerals enhanced the beans’ characteristics, creating a perfectly balanced flavor profile. This collaboration highlighted the malty sweetness of Costa Rica’s Arabica coffee beans and was celebrated as a rare, sustainable process that showcased local craftsmanship and respect for the land.
Becoming a Permanent Collection
After record-breaking sales and consumer demand, our fermentation process earns a permanent place in Nespresso’s global Master Origin collection.
Deepening Bioprocess Research
Paulina deepened her expertise in bioprocess engineering, taking advanced courses during her time at UC Berkeley. She contributed to cutting-edge research at the Arkin Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology and worked with Bolt Threads, a company specializing in sustainable biomaterials.
Discovery of Skin Benefits
Scientific evaluation of Orosi thermal water confirms its potential for hydration, regeneration, and antioxidant protection—triggering the development of dermocosmetic applications.
Academic Milestone & Beauty Industry Insight
Paulina graduates from UC Berkeley and joins Amyris, a biotech leader collaborating with Estée Lauder and L’Oréal, strengthening our commitment to transparency and green chemistry.
A Clearer Skincare Mission
Research reveals the prevalence of harmful ingredients in skincare, motivating us to build a safer, science-backed alternative rooted in transparency.
The Birth of Orosi Dermotermal
We officially begin developing the Orosi Dermotermal skincare line, combining the natural power of Orosi thermal spring water with cutting-edge, sustainable technology. This milestone was achieved through our partnership with AMSA, a leader in private-label manufacturing, known for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation. Under the guidance of Ricardo Gerli, AMSA’s expertise in cosmetics production aligned with our mission to create skincare that prioritizes transparency, environmental responsibility, and exceptional performance.
Brewing a Future in Beauty
Mia graduates as a Chemical Engineer from UC Berkeley and joins Molson Coors’ prestigious Manufacturing Rotational Program. Her expertise in advanced fermentation techniques and manufacturing innovation strengthens Orosi Dermotermal’s approach of integrating fermentation and thermal spring water technology into skincare development.
